Make a Decision – Live Your Own Life

Introduction

Really this article all about questions and possible answers.

In other words “Make a decision – live your own life”

Should you do this? Should you do that? One thing is absolutely certain you will never know what is right or wrong until it is too late, if it is right, you will give yourself a pat on the back, if it is wrong, guess what that is called hindsight.

At the end of the day only one person is responsible for making that decision and that is you, yes you may be guided by others, given what appears to be good advice, but until you try it out you will never know what was right or wrong!

The Road Map

If you look at it logically, we have already said that life is about what choices and the decisions that we make. Another way is to compare to a road, with all its twists and turns. Yes some roads are short, others are long, we have those that are smooth and crooked, straight, yet rocky. If you look back over the last few years, does some of this seem familiar?

In the life that we lead, whether it be long or short, we will come across a number of different roads, we can include the roads when we are single, at University, or further education, our marriage and the blessings of children. (Apologies here for those who did not marry or did not have children).

What about those roads that I tend to call the roads of fate, do they lead to a life of untold riches? or poverty and destitution? Until we get there we will never know, will we? Consider also the roads that lead to sadness, humiliation and also happiness, also to defeat and disappointment, as well as jubilation and victory.

Always remember that like any other road, there will be detours, corners and even crossroads in your life.

It is almost certain that the one road that could cause you some confusion, is the crossroad. You have four roads here yo choose from, unless you are physic, you will have hardly any knowledge of which road to choose, so which one will you take? What guarantee do you have that you will choose the right one?

Would you stay where you are? Flip a coin to make a decision!, go right or left, or carry straight on. Until you make that decision, you have not got a clue where that road will lead you, until you step onto it. You do not any guarantees as to the outcome of your decision. If there is one important thing that you need to understand about life it is this. In other words “Make a Decision – Live your Own Life”

If I may I would like to give you a real life example of my own life and making a decision:

When I was a teenager, I met a girl fell in love, we decided to marry, then the bombshell she wrote and said that she was not yet ready to be engaged, despite this I still spent a week at her family home. The next time we met, I was dumped. For some reason I was glad that I knew where I stood. This is where I could have attempted to save things, I just let it all go.

A couple of months later I met someone else, within eight or nine months we were married, a day before the wedding I did confide in my Mum, that this could a rebound from my last relationship, the answer I got back, was if you feel like that call it off now. Of course I did not, five months later, she left me.

Of course hindsight is a wonderful thing and I often think back to this moment in my life, but on the plus side I have now been married for nearly Fifty Four Years to a truly wonderful lady, have two fantastic children and grandchildren. Suppose the moral of this little look at my past, live for today, the past is gone, let it go.

I could relate a number of other examples from life, but at the end of the day, we make a choice and it is what it is.

Unfortunately, with a lot of the decisions that we make there too many outcomes, which at the end of the day are out of our control. The only power that we have is what decisions that we make and how we would or would not react and act to whatever situations should arise. As we discussed before wrong decisions are always known as hindsight.

Would you have still made that decision, if you knew that it was wrong? It is unlikely that you would go down a stony path to the Cliff, when you knew in advance that it could lead to disaster. When you make a decision, reflected on it, then you realise it is sound.

If your actions prove to be right, then you have made the correct decision, anything else and you are wrong. You, and you alone must make the decision, so you must take the risk and decide. As life does not come with guarantees, you will not know if your decision is right or wrong, that is until you have made it.

I suppose that one way of looking at things it is better than being in limbo. Whilst it is true that a wrong turn could cause you to become lost, it could be that it could have the reverse effect and open up opportunities that you have never dreamed of. You have lost, or finding happiness by accident.

However, be careful that the decisions that you make are not done in a haphazard fashion. When you take a risk, make sure that you are not being both stupid and careless.

To help you choose the best option when at life’s crossroads here are some helpful hints.

You need to find as much information as you can about the problem. How find the confidence to make a decision, when the information that you have about the problem is so scant. When I trained as both an instructor and a sales manager, we were taught to ask the Five W’s:

Who are those involved

What alternatives do you have

Why do you have this problem

When did this occur

Where is the end result

These are just five questions that you could ask to enable you to find out more about the problem. Please understand that this is important, it is very often the reason that you are indecisive, having a lack of information a bout the problem.

You must weigh up both the options for and against, if you assess each option first, this way you can get a better opinion about what option the situation would be best. Just trust yourself and stand by your judgment.

At the end of the day you have made the decision to live your live, instead of standing on the sidelines.

Irrespective of whether you have made the right or wrong decision, will be dictated by time, whatever the outcome do not regret the result, it is better to learn from the result, enabling you when needed to make a better decision in the future.

Conclusion

I hope that this article has given you some confidence when decisions that you make do not turn as you had hoped. Remember that roads have many twists and turns.

The next article which will be published on Monday will be on “A Look at Meditation”

  1. Our entire life is a sum of good and bad decisions. Only by making these decision do we learn from our mistakes. This is what experience does. We should not be afraid to make decisions even if their results are not so clear to us. The road to success is full of crossroads that we do not know where they lead.

  2. Thank you for writing this. Living your own life means making decisions for yourself, even when the outcome may not be what you anticipated. It takes confidence and courage to step out of your comfort zone and take risks, but like you said, every road has its twists and turns. You are your ship’s captain, and navigating rough waters only builds character and resilience. I would love to embrace the journey, trust myself, and have faith that everything will work out in the end.

  3. Life is definitely full of twists and turns. We may have had plans that did not materialize but I think that all of these different paths give us learning experiences and help us grow. In the end it is our attitude in dealing with difficulties that determines how we get back on the road and continue in this journey called life. Keep postive and be grateful even in the face of adversity and good things are bound to happen.
