Depression

Introduction

Originally I had intended that this article or blog would be about not just Depression, but also Anxiety and Mental Health, I did realise that it would barely scratch the surface as there would be so much to cover, however I did feel that it was the right article to follow on from my previous posts.

Had a complete rethink, as a result this article will be all about depression, feel that is needed given the previous posts. It will certainly touch the surface more than my original idea, but will not be totally in depth, as this is not a book.

It is my intention that I will still do posts on both anxiety and mental health, but in a slighter deeper thought than originally intended, when I have not yet decided, as I would ideally like to lighten the mood of this site a little, with an article that is not so depressing, this article will hopefully be next and a little lighter than this one and those that have preceded it.

Signs or Symptoms of Depression

Depression, like any other human illness, must be treated and given appropriate attention. To know whether you or people around you are suffering from the “blues”, just try to look for these signs:

1. Mood swings that last more that a few days. If you notice that your friend or a member of the family, has had mood swings that have lasted for several days, this could be the start of them suffering from depression.

2. A sudden weigh loss or gain. Have you or someone you know put on, or lost weight, without any apparent reason? This again could be a sign that they are suffering from depression.

3. Insomnia or hypersomnia (sleeping too much). A person who has problems sleeping, or is sleeping too much, could be starting to suffer from depression.

4. Loss of interest in all activities. Once you were the centre of all that went on but not anymore, another sign of depression.

5. Restlessness. Do you find it difficult to concentrate, are you always wanting to go from one task to another? This again could be a form of depression

7. Unusual talkativeness. If a person that you know suddenly becomes very talkative, when usually they are fairly quiet, this could be the onset of depression.

8. Inability to concentrate or make simple decisions. The mind wanders, you feel that you can no longer concentrate on the job in hand, you have difficulty saying yes or no when asked to make a decision. Depression, could be around the corner.

9. Recurrent thoughts of death or suicidal thoughts. Thinking of a loved one’s death, too often, or others that you knew, having thoughts whether you should end it all. These are serious and dangerous thoughts, help should be sort, or at least talk to someone.

If you suspect your friend or relative is showing suicidal tendencies or if you hear morbid talk about death and dying…be alarmed! Suicide is the eighth leading cause of death among men living in the United States, although acts of suicide is more common among women.

Surely, moral support and encouragement is very important. Providing a depressed person a reliable support system composed of family, friends and other close members of the community. Finding a qualified health care professional who can give antidepressant prescriptions or the most effective antidepressant may also be considered. Together with proper counseling, family support, encouragement from friends, and medications — a person’s efforts to regain self-confidence and self-esteem may be rewarded in due time.

The more that I read about depression I did think that did I suffer from it? But then I recall that night when I went for a walk along the River Bank, totally fed up, my business was failing, the house was almost lost through no money, looking into the dark depths of the water and thinking should I just end it all, Common sense came to the rescue as did my religious beliefs. What right had I to leave my wife and family with a mess to clean up which was totally of my making? My religion had taught me that to take a life was wrong, so would taking my own be any different? I lit a cigarette. , and went home. Panic over.

Some Ways to Manage Depression

Not in the best of moods recently? Feel that there is no way out of the depressive mood that you are in? You will not be alone. It has to be accepted that Depression is a state of which we all will suffer from sometime in our lives.

There are a number of reasons why we suffer from depression personal problems I would suggest are the top of the bill, certainly from my own perspective. It is possible to do some simple things to help manage your depression.

Some effective ways are:

Frequent Exercise

Going for a brisk half hour walk, or just exercising for say 15 to 20 minutes, will make you feel better and improve your mood. This causes the release of the hormone serotonin, which is released with the increased flow of oxygen in the blood. This hormone release is a result of those physical activities. If you walk the hormone oxytocin, can be released, this is known to free the mind of anxieties and worries, it is also released during lovemaking.

Set Yourself Small Goals

As mentioned earlier a loss of interest or confidence can be a major factor in suffering from depression. this can be combated by setting small goals which can be achieved. Goals such as making tea and toast, are more than adequate to start with. Accomplishing simple goals, confidence improves and eventually depression is relegated to the back of your mind.

Eat a Healty Diet

Just because you eat take away it does not mean that they make you depressed, though the queue in some of these places is enough to make anyone depressed, especially if you are hungry. There is evidence that if you do eat healthy foods, that you can be lifted out of your state of depression. Eating such foods as avocado and spinach which contain folic acid, and salmon or tuna, which both contain Omega 3, have the reputation of being good anti-depressants, the regular consumption of these foods, can be a great help in fighting depression.

As a total aside, I wrote the above notes last night before I went to bed. This morning I was not in the best of tempers, possibly, even slightly depressed for no apparent reason. So when I was in the bathroom stripped off, I did my exercises, which always include deep breathing, result back to normal thinking.

Conclusion

Another depressing article, but one that I feel is vital to your well-being, it is so very important that you are aware of the danger signs of depression.

The next article which will be posted on Monday will be Set Your Goals.

  1. Having first hand experience I can say that getting over such a state is not an easy thing to do and needs a lot of work and obviously one needs to be willing to get out of such a condition. Because no matter how much help you give such a person if that person is not willing to help himself then all this will be in vein. But one can surely get out of depression, slowly and with steady steps you can really find a new meaning and turns things around. Taking the first step is the most important one…
