Set Your Goals

Introduction

If you just amble along from day to day without a plan, then you are almost certain to fail. It is vital to your success whether it be in business, or your personal life that you have a plan of action, in other words set your goals. Where do you hope to be in six months time for example? If the answer is the Bahamas, great how do you propose to not only get there, but pay for it. You must set a goal to achieve your ambition.

So Set Your Goals – It Is A Lot Easier Said, than Done

Setting your goals is a well known tactic amongst those at the top of their profession, such as sports people, and those who are very successful in their chosen field. When you set goals, the aim is to give you motivation and focus over both the long and short term. Doing this enables you to acquire the knowledge that you need to help you plan your time and organise your resources. This then enables you to get the very best that you can out of your life.

If your short and long term goals are clearly defined, they will let you achieve personal satisfaction which enables you to measure your progress, once you have achieved your goals. If you do chart your progress you can see the differing stages that have been completed which will lead to your actual goals being realised. The stops you feeling that the road is long and pointless trying to achieve you goal. As you become aware of your capabilities, your competence and self-confidence will improve as you achieve or complete your goals.

Put into English, basic goal setting involves making a decision as to what you want to do in your personal life, then looking at what long and short term goals that you will need to achieve this. These goals must then be broken down into smaller and more manageable targets, these you must complete on your journey towards your lifetime targets. Now make a list, then you must not waste time in completing it.

One way that you can manage your list is to have both daily and weekly goals, this way you will head towards your life goals, each day you will accomplish something, that will give you the feeling that you have at least accomplished something. For sometime I have planned my week on a Sunday, then as needed add the daily tasks as I feel that they are needed. I then cross them off as they are completed. It does make life and planning simple.

Here are some ideas that you need to consider when you set goals and how to achieve them.

When you set your goals your attitude plays a vital role when you set and then achieve your goals. Ask yourself the question, is anything holding you back from completing even the easiest of tasks? Is there anything in the way that you behave that is likely to disrupt your plans? Should you have any problems then you must sort them out.

The practice of good time management is the basis of those who have good and successful careers. When a carer fails it is often attributed to bad time management practice. You must plan just how far you wish to in your business or career.

Your education can be a key factor in helping you to achieve your goals. Should your goals require you to have certain qualifications, make plans to get them.

You must never leave out your family in your plans. It does depend on the stage of your development in life, do you have children? Do you want children? How do they fit into your plans?

Your personal finances will play an important part in your plans, in fact I would say a major part in your plans. How much do you need to earn? How much do you want to earn? Be realistic when arriving at these figures, then make a plan to achieve your goal, if needed do it in stages, if it is easier to plan.

Your physical attributes could play an important role in your plans, as could any disabilities. Proper planning does take an important role in this.

You must plan to have some time to yourself and your family, what I call ME TIME, it is vital that you do not spend every hour working.

This depends on your time of life, but break your plans down into segments, in my case, daily, weekly and monthly. Yours could have yearly or even five yearly plans or goals listed.

Make sure that you create a daily to do list, as I mentioned earlier, I do a weekly plan on a Sunday, with daily to do lists, these are reviewed each evening, and the next days amended as needed. You must accept that some days that you cannot do the full list for a number of reasons, others you will be able to add extra items to the list.

Keep all your plans under constant review, do not forget to plan for the unexpected.

Conclusion

Doing the basic concept of goal setting should not be difficult once you get used to it.

  1. I agree that setting your goals is one of the major factors that contribute to your success, whether in business or personal life. Yet, many people fail to do this which eventually causes them to fail. As you rightly pointed out, how else can you measure your progress and success if you do not have a goal to meet?

I was stuck in the corporate world for more than 2 decades because I failed to set a goal. I thought working for somebody else was the “norm” so it never crossed my mind to take another direction. I never asked the question, “Where do I want to be 5 or 10 years from now?” I would not want to repeat the same mistake I made when I was just starting out. So, now that I am out of the rat race, setting realistic goals has become part of my weekly “to-do list.”

    • Hi Alice,

What a very informed reply, so full of realism.  Had to tell me youngest Grandson today, remember “You do not plan to fail, you just failed to plan”  Something which I always taught my students.

      Many Thanks

  2. I believe that the blueprint to success is having a goal and by the way I am from the Bahamas which is such a lovely place. Setting goals is like a measuring stick or a compass that will guide us along the way which will help us to ensure our success as we go from day to day. No success story ever became a success without goal setting. Thanks for sharing.

    • Hi Norman,

Pity that I cannot reply in person, always fancied a trip to the Bahamas!
